When you collect a new car from a dealership, the paint is in the best condition it will ever be from the factory. From that moment, every mile driven, every wash, every bird dropping, and every careless door in a car park has the potential to introduce damage that compounds over time. The decisions made in the first 48 hours determine how well protected that paint is against everything that follows.
At Doyen Voss, we work with new car owners across Plymouth and South Devon to prepare and protect their vehicles before the first mile of normal use. Here is what that process involves and why it matters.
The Problem with “New” Car Paint
A car leaving the factory has paint that is freshly laid and cured but not necessarily in perfect condition. Transport, loading, unloading, and PDI (pre-delivery inspection) preparation at the dealership all introduce the risk of contamination and light surface damage. Protective transport films leave adhesive residue. PDI polishing with dealer equipment and products can introduce the swirl marks that owners then discover in their first service appointment.
The dealer paint protection product offered to you at the point of sale is almost universally not the same thing as a professional ceramic coating or PPF. It is typically a wax or basic sealant applied as a high-margin add-on. In the vast majority of cases, it is not worth the price charged.
What a New Car Detail at Doyen Voss Involves
Our new car detail process begins before any protection is applied. The vehicle is decontaminated using a full iron fallout treatment and clay bar process to remove bonded contamination from the paint surface. The paintwork is then assessed using a depth gauge and inspection lighting to identify any swirl marks, transport damage, or pre-existing defects.
If defects are present, appropriate paint correction is carried out before protection is applied. There is no value in applying a ceramic coating or PPF over defective paintwork: the defects are locked in permanently. We correct first, protect second.
Choosing Your Protection
Following decontamination and any necessary correction, the protection package is applied. For new cars, we typically discuss three options: ceramic coating for comprehensive chemical and UV protection across the full vehicle; targeted PPF on the highest-impact areas with ceramic coating over the remainder; or a full PPF wrap for owners who want the maximum physical protection available.
The right choice depends on how you use the car, where you park it, how many miles you drive on A and B roads where stone chip risk is highest, and your budget. We discuss all of this at the initial consultation.
When Should You Book?
Ideally, before collection. We can work with your dealership to arrange the vehicle coming directly to our Plympton studio after PDI, before you drive it. Alternatively, bring it to us within the first week of collection before regular use has begun. The earlier the better.
